Japanese Iced Coffee / アイスコーヒー

Brewing hot drip coffee directly onto ice: the Japanese Iced Coffee! Easy, quick, and delicious.

What is Japanese Iced Coffee?

Japanese style iced coffee is coffee that drip brewed directly onto ice. You can use a pour over or even an electric coffee brewer – just make sure to put ice into a container directly under the coffee so it chills the coffee rapidly. It’s so easy since it’s essentially brewed & chilled in one step!

What makes Japanese Iced Coffee so special?

The act of chilling the coffee immediately after brewing is what makes Japanese Iced Coffee taste so wonderful. There’s lots of science behind this but essentially, the quick chilling gives the coffee a bright flavor and retains the just-brewed taste for longer than any other type of brewing style.

Some tips

Since you are brewing over ice, the ratios when making the iced coffee is very important since you have to take into consideration ice melt. So I recommend using as scale to make sure the ratios are correct for the best cup of coffee.

If doing a pour over, make sure to wet the grounds and let them bloom for 30 seconds before continuing on with the process. This improves flavor extraction.

You can use any ice you desire, but I used Kuramoto Ice’s ice for this. Specialty ice can help reduce any extra flavors (since Kuramoto’s Ice literally has no flavor) and it’s also slow melting.
