Melon Cream Soda

Japanese Cream Soda / クリームソーダ

Japanese cream soda is one of my favorite summer treats!

Cream Soda in Japan is very different from what Cream Soda is in the States or in other countries. It’s actually a float made using melon soda, vanilla ice cream, and usually topped with a cherry.

What is melon soda?

I’m not much of a soda drinker but I love melon soda! I know melon flavored soda might sound weird to a lot of people, but it’s actually an extremely popular flavor in Japan. It also has a nostalgia factor since many Japanese people grew up drinking it and it’s often served with kids meals sets. Aside from melon soda, you can get melon flavored shaved ice, kit kats, and all sorts of other goodies! It doesn’t quite taste like actual melon, but it’s based on Japan’s popular musk melons.

This recipe is extremely easy to make but it might be a little hard to find melon flavored syrup outside of Japan (sorry!). If it’s the summer, many Japanese markets will carry them, but it’s even quite hard to find it online. You can buy canned or bottled Japanese melon soda to use as a base instead of making it yourself, too! Head down to my “Shop this post” below to shop bottled melon soda.

I hope you can try making this refreshing flavor of Japanese summer in your own home! If you make it and post it, tag me @sylvia.wakana on Instagram and TikTok!
