This easy recipe for tonkatsu sauce, one of Japan’s most popular sauces, only uses 4 ingredients and takes less than 5 minutes to make.
I *love* tonkatsu sauce. This thick, tangy sauce is normally made from vegetables and fruits, spices, soy sauce, vinegar, and sugar. It’s most commonly served with tonkatsu (deep-fried pork cutlet) but it also used for other fried dishes like korokke (croquettes) and ebi-fry (fried shrimp). It’s also quite similar to okonomiyaki or takoyaki sauces.
While making the sauce from complete scratch can be super time consuming, sometimes you find yourself running out of your favorite tonkatsu sauce (ahem, Bulldog) at the worst time or you just don’t have access to any and you need something.
This tonkatsu sauce is a quick version that actually utilizes other sauces to make the sauce. Utilizing only 4 ingredients, it’s super fast and delicious. You can also add more or less of each ingredient to make a flavor you really enjoy (if you want your sauce more on the sweet side, or more on the tangy side).
