Sylvia Wakana - Blue Matcha Latte

Blue Matcha Latte / 青い抹茶ラテ

Can you believe this beautiful blue drink is matcha?!

While blue “matcha” has been creeping onto the internet, I was disappointed to find that these “blue matcha lattes” actually contained no matcha. It was just a name. Which means you get no health benefits of matcha (antioxidants! high caffeine with no crash! boosted brain function!) or the delicious flavor. I decided I wanted to change that and make a drink that has actual matcha in it that is still a beautiful blue color.

So I present to you, the Blue Matcha Latte – Sylvia Wakana version. A lovely blend of REAL matcha and butterfly pea flower tea (which gives it the beautiful blue color naturally).

What is matcha?

Matcha is a popular type of Japanese green tea. The tea leaves are ground whole so rather than steeping the leaves, the fine powder is mixed with water to make the tea. This gives you all the best benefits of matcha as well as its unique flavor. Japan has a long history with matcha from traditional, ancient tea ceremonies to matcha being used in all sorts of confections and desserts today.

Matcha Recommendations

One of my favorite brands of matcha is Chafinity (they ship worldwide). It’s extremely high quality ceremonial grade organic matcha from a small family-owned farm in Kagoshima, Japan.

If you are just getting into matcha and are looking for something more affordable, I highly recommend Matcha Bloom. It’s still great quality (still ceremonial grade) and I’ve used this for cooking/baking as well as drinking! You can use code SW10 for a discount.

Ingredients

  • water
  • 1 tsp matcha
  • 3 tsp butterfly pea flowers you can use the flowers like me or there's powder or bagged versions
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 cup milk

Instructions

  • Heat the water to just before boiling. In a matcha bowl or wide-bottomed bowl, put in 1 tsp of matcha powder and a little bit of the water (about 2 oz). Whisk the matcha until smooth.
  • In a mug or cup, pour in some of the hot water for your latte base. Steep 2 tsp of butterfly pea flowers for about 3-5 minutes or until you achieve your desired color (I recommend keeping it lighter than going too dark since the matcha will darken it).
  • Once the butterfly pea flower base is done steeping, pour in the matcha and stir.
  • Heat the milk lightly (do not boil). Steep 1 tsp of butterfly pea flowers in the hot milk to make the milk a pretty light blue color (I recommend going slightly darker than what you want since it will look less bold after it's frothed). Once desired color is achieved, froth the milk.
  • Top your tea base with the frothed milk and enjoy!
