Sylvia Wakana - Matcha Waffles

Matcha Waffles / 抹茶ワッフル

Matcha Waffles (抹茶ワッフル) are a perfect sweet treat for breakfast or dessert!

I love making Belgian waffles at home and adding matcha just seemed so natural. While these are great as breakfast waffles (topped with some maple syrup and butter), waffles in Japan are typically desserts and that is where these matcha waffles shine. They would be perfect with butter and red bean paste spread across them, or with whipped cream and strawberries! I even like putting vanilla or matcha ice cream on top when they’re freshly out of the waffle maker – nothing better!

What is matcha?

Matcha is a type of Japanese green tea powder that is made from dried and ground tea leaves. It’s earthy and slightly bitter with a vibrant green color. It has been the cornerstone of traditional Japanese tea ceremonies for ages but has extended into desserts and confections in the recent years and popularity has exploded across the globe due to it’s health benefits.
