Sylvia Wakana - Yakisoba

Yakisoba / 焼きそば

Yakisoba (焼きそば) is a type of Japanese stir fried noodles in a sweet and savory sauce. It’s one of Japan’s most popular street foods (and my favorite Japanese street food).

When people think of Japanese noodles, they will most likely think of soupy noodles like ramen or udon. My favorite types of Japanese noodles, however, are stir fried noodles – especially Yakisoba!

Because of how easy (and cheap) it is to find ingredients for Yakisoba as well as how simple and fast it is to make in bulk, it’s a popular choice for street stalls and vendors at festivals or events. You can use almost any ingredients, but my recipe uses the most common ones.

The sweet and savory sauce is super addicting. I included the ingredients to make it at home but they also sell bottled yakisoba sauce in Japanese markets, which is fine to use as well (I often do this to save time). If you want to buy the bottled sauce, you can find it in MY PANTRY or below in the “Shop this post” section, but don’t blame me if you get addicted and want to put it on everything.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 onion
  • 1 carrot
  • 3 shiitake mushrooms
  • 3 green onions chopped
  • 5 cabbage leaves
  • 1 lb thinly sliced pork or beef
  • 1 package yakisoba noodles
  • 4-6 tbsp yakisoba sauce either packaged or using the following recipe

Homemade Yakisoba Sauce

  • 4 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 2 tsp soy sauce
  • 4 tsp oyster sauce
  • 4 tsp ketchup

Instructions

  • Slice the onion, carrot, and mushrooms into very thin slices. Cut the cabbage into bite-sized pieces and cut the meat into 1 inch pieces.
  • In a wok or frying pan, heat oil on medium-high heat and cook the meat until almost cooked through.
  • Add the onion and carrot and cook for 1-2 minutes.
  • Add the cabbage and mushroom and cook until slightly tender.
  • Separate the yakisoba noodles and add them to the wok. Lower the heat to medium and mix ingredients with the noodles well.
  • Add yakisoba sauce (either from a premade sauce or combine the sauce ingredients together) and mix well. If you prefer a stronger flavor, you can add more sauce.
  • Garnish and serve with chopped green onions.
